Unexplained infertility

If both spouses have normal reproductive function parameters, but the desired pregnancy does not occur, the following diagnoses may be established:

  • immuno-infertility
  • unexplained infertility

Immuno-infertility is excessive activity of the woman’s immune system, such that the partner’s sperm (or the embryo) is perceived by it as alien and is destroyed (rejected).

Unexplained infertility

The couple is tested for immunological compatibility using special procedures:

  • post-coital test, i.e., determining the sperm count and motility in the cervical mucus at some time after coitus
  • Kurzrok–Miller test, i.e., microscopic testing of mucus taken from the cervical canal, together with the husband’s sperm
  • оdetermination of anti-sperm antibodies in the cervical mucus that are formed by the female body against the partner’s spermatozoa

The tests are aimed at assessing the survival capacity of spermatozoa entering the uterine cervix. When artificial fertilization methods are used, the immunological incompatibility will not affect the result, therefore the foregoing tests are only conducted when the couple tries to achieve pregnancy through natural conception. If a couple chooses to use the ICSI method, it is preceded by thorough preparation of the sperm and oocytes in the Clinic laboratory, so that immune cells are not activated (to prevent embryonal rejection).

Unexplained infertility

It may be caused by some imperfections in the couple’s ovum and spermatozoa, which cannot be established even using the most up-to-date methods. But the problem can be solved - by IVF. IVF allows a couple s to overcome the barriers to conception.
